One of the most dangerous enemies of Imam Mahdi and his companions is the Jews; Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says: “Indeed, the most severe of people in enmity toward those who have believed are the Jews and the polytheists.” (1)
As some narrations indicate, the Sufyani—Imam Mahdi’s fiercest enemy—is supported by the Westerners and the Jews. Essentially, the Sufyani is brought to power to protect Israel’s borders and suppress revolutionary forces, so that his masters remain safe from the threat of the army of Khorasan and the supporters of Mahdi , who rise to liberate Jerusalem. In verses from the blessed Surah Al-Isra, it is stated:
“We informed the Children of Israel in the Book (Torah) that you would commit corruption in the land twice and show great arrogance ﴾﴿ When the first promise arrives, We will stir up a group of our warrior servants against you; they will search the houses, and this is a definite promise ﴾﴿ Then We will give you victory over them and assist you with wealth and children, and We will increase your numbers. If you do good, it is for yourselves; and if you do evil, it is likewise for yourselves ﴾﴿ When the second promise arrives, signs of grief and sorrow will appear on your faces; they will enter the mosque (Al-Aqsa) as they did the first time, and whatever they take under their control, they will crush” (2)
Imam Sadiq , in the interpretation of “We will stir up a group of our warrior servants against you,” said: “They are the ones whom Allah will raise before the appearance of the Mahdi, and they do not summon any enemy of the Prophet’s family except that they slay him.” (3)
In his Tafsir, Ayashi narrates from Imam Baqir that after reciting the verse “We will stir up a group of our warrior servants against you,” the Imam said: “They are Mahdi and his companions, who possess great strength and power.” (4)
From Imam Sadiq it is narrated that the Imam recited the aforementioned noble verse; one of his companions asked: “May I be your ransom! Who are they?” The Imam repeated three times: “By Allah! They are the people of Qom.” (5)
According to the apparent meaning of narrations in Shia and Sunni sources, the battle between Muslims and Jews in the End Times refers to this conflict. As the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “The Hour will not be established until a battle occurs between the Muslims and the Jews, in which the Muslims will annihilate all of them; so that if a Jewish (combatant) hides behind a rock or tree, the stone or tree will cry out: ‘O Muslim! This is a Jewish (combatant) hiding in my shelter; kill him.” (6)
From these narrations, it is evident that Allah will prepare the ground for the emergence through the Iranians, and the resistance of the Jews against the Muslims will occur in several stages, with the final destruction of the Jews by Imam Mahdi.
The retrieval of the original Torah from the cave of Antioch, a mountain in Syria and Palestine, and the Sea of Galilee by Imam Mahdi , and his argumentation with the Jews, exemplifies a cultural confrontation used as evidence. The Prophet (PBUH) narrated: “He will bring out the Torah and the Gospel from the land called Antioch.” (7) The Prophet (PBUH) also said: “The sacred chest will be revealed to him from the Sea of Galilee, and his companions will bring it and place it before him in Jerusalem; when the Jews witness it, a large group of them, about thirty thousand, will embrace Islam.” (8)
